Appreciative Inquiry

Coaching & Professional Development Glossary

Definition

Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a strengths-based, positive approach to organizational and personal change developed by David Cooperrider at Case Western Reserve University. It focuses on discovering what is already working well — the best of what has been — and using those insights to envision, design, and create more of what brings vitality, success, and meaning. The AI process typically follows a 4-D cycle: Discover, Dream, Design, and Destiny.

In Coaching Context

Coaches draw on Appreciative Inquiry principles by orienting conversations toward peak experiences, core strengths, and desired futures rather than problems and deficits. Questions like "Tell me about a time when you were at your absolute best" or "What would your ideal day look like?" shift clients' attention toward possibility and vitality. This approach is particularly effective with clients who are stuck in deficit thinking or who have been conditioned by cultures that focus exclusively on problem-solving and gap analysis.

Why It Matters

Where we focus our attention shapes what we see and what we create. Organizations and individuals who consistently focus on problems tend to become expert problem-analyzers but often struggle to generate genuine innovation and positive momentum. Appreciative Inquiry offers a counterbalancing lens — one that builds energy, amplifies what is already working, and uses the positive past as a foundation for an inspired future. It has been applied successfully in organizational change, community development, coaching, and leadership development worldwide.
