Burnout

Coaching & Professional Development Glossary

Definition

Burnout is a state of chronic physical and emotional exhaustion resulting from prolonged exposure to excessive stress, overwhelming demands, or a lack of meaningful recovery. It is characterized by feelings of depletion, cynicism, and a reduced sense of personal accomplishment. The World Health Organization recognizes burnout as an occupational phenomenon.

In Coaching Context

Many clients come to coaching either already experiencing burnout or showing early warning signs. Coaches help clients examine the root causes — often a mismatch between personal values and work demands, absent boundaries, or perfectionism — and co-create sustainable strategies for recovery and prevention. While coaches are not therapists, they can be a powerful support in rebuilding energy, purpose, and a sense of control.

Why It Matters

Burnout has serious consequences for health, relationships, and career longevity. Recognizing it early and addressing its root causes — rather than simply pushing harder — is essential. Addressing burnout through coaching is not about working less, but about working more intentionally: aligning effort with meaning, establishing recovery practices, and building a more resilient relationship with one's professional life.
