Boundaries

Coaching & Professional Development Glossary

Definition

Boundaries are personal limits that define what is acceptable and unacceptable in one's relationships, work, and environment. They protect physical, emotional, and psychological well-being by clarifying expectations, communicating needs, and preserving the conditions necessary for healthy functioning. Boundaries can be physical, emotional, time-based, energetic, or relational — and effective boundaries are expressed clearly, consistently, and respectfully.

In Coaching Context

Boundary-setting is one of the most common and impactful topics in coaching. Many clients struggle with saying no, accepting too many commitments, allowing others to repeatedly violate their needs, or feeling responsible for managing others' emotions. Coaches help clients identify where their boundaries are unclear or absent, explore the beliefs and fears that make boundary-setting feel dangerous, and practice communicating limits with confidence and clarity. The result is typically less resentment, more energy, and stronger relationships.

Why It Matters

Without healthy boundaries, individuals are vulnerable to overwork, emotional exhaustion, resentment, and the erosion of personal identity. Paradoxically, people who struggle with boundaries often fear that setting them will damage relationships — but the opposite is usually true. Clear boundaries create the conditions for genuinely respectful relationships and sustainable professional engagement. Learning to set and maintain healthy boundaries is one of the most practical and life-changing outcomes of coaching.
