Presence

Coaching & Professional Development Glossary

Definition

Presence refers to the quality of being fully engaged, attentive, and available — physically, mentally, and emotionally — in a given interaction. In coaching, presence is an ICF core competency defined as "being fully conscious and creating spontaneous relationship with the client, employing a style that is open, flexible, grounded, and confident." It is the foundation upon which all other coaching competencies rest.

In Coaching Context

A coach who is truly present sets aside their own agenda, assumptions, and internal distractions to be entirely with the client. This quality of attention is rare and powerful — it creates a container in which clients feel safe to be honest, vulnerable, and reflective. Coaching presence involves suspending judgment, tolerating uncertainty, and trusting the process even when it moves in unexpected directions. Developing presence is an ongoing practice for coaches at every level.

Why It Matters

In an era of constant distraction and fragmented attention, genuine presence has become increasingly rare and valuable. When clients experience a coach who is truly present, they consistently describe it as one of the most meaningful aspects of the coaching relationship. Presence signals respect, safety, and care. For leaders, developing executive presence — the capacity to command attention and inspire trust through genuine engagement — is one of the most impactful development areas coaching can address.
