Vision

Coaching & Professional Development Glossary

Definition

Vision is a compelling and inspiring image of a desired future state — a clear picture of what one is working toward and why it matters. A strong vision provides direction, motivation, and a standard against which current choices can be evaluated. In leadership contexts, vision is often described as the ability to see beyond present constraints and paint a picture of a better future compelling enough to inspire collective action.

In Coaching Context

Vision work is a powerful component of many coaching engagements. Coaches help clients create vivid, emotionally resonant visions of their desired future — in their career, relationships, health, or life as a whole. A well-articulated vision serves as a motivating north star when daily challenges threaten to narrow focus to what is merely urgent. Coaches use creative exercises, visualization, and powerful questions to help clients access and articulate visions that are authentic and inspiring rather than obligatory or borrowed.

Why It Matters

Without vision, people tend to live reactively — responding to circumstances rather than shaping them. With a clear vision, even difficult, demanding work becomes meaningful because it is in service of something genuinely valued. For leaders, the capacity to articulate and communicate a compelling vision is one of the most critical capabilities — it is what transforms management into leadership. Coaching helps individuals and leaders develop and sustain the kind of visionary clarity that drives purposeful, sustained action.
