Unconscious Bias

Coaching & Professional Development Glossary

Definition

Unconscious bias refers to implicit attitudes, stereotypes, and assumptions that influence a person's judgments, decisions, and behaviors without their conscious awareness or intention. These biases are shaped by culture, upbringing, media, and lived experience, and operate automatically — affecting everything from hiring decisions and performance reviews to who gets invited to speak in meetings and whose ideas receive serious consideration.

In Coaching Context

Coaches help leaders and professionals develop awareness of their own unconscious biases and the ways these biases may affect their relationships, decisions, and leadership effectiveness. This requires a safe, non-judgmental space in which clients can honestly examine their patterns without shame. Coaching also supports clients in developing practical strategies to interrupt automatic bias in high-stakes moments — such as hiring, promoting, evaluating, or forming teams — and to build more inclusive leadership practices.

Why It Matters

Unconscious bias has significant consequences for equity, innovation, and organizational performance. When bias goes unexamined, it perpetuates patterns of exclusion, undermines meritocracy, and limits the diversity of perspectives that drive organizational effectiveness. For individuals, unexamined biases narrow their relationships, limit their capacity for empathy, and reduce the quality of their decisions. Developing bias awareness is not about guilt — it is about becoming a more accurate, fair, and effective thinker and leader.
