Reframing

Coaching & Professional Development Glossary

Definition

Reframing is the practice of changing the conceptual or emotional viewpoint through which a situation is interpreted — shifting its meaning while the underlying facts remain the same. Derived from both cognitive-behavioral therapy and NLP (neuro-linguistic programming), reframing allows individuals to discover alternative interpretations that are more empowering, accurate, or generative than their habitual perspective. It is one of the fundamental tools of coaching and change work.

In Coaching Context

Coaches offer reframes when clients appear stuck in a limiting interpretation of their situation. Rather than telling a client they are wrong, a skillful coach might ask: "What else could this situation mean?" or "How might you view this if you were your wisest, most resourceful self?" A well-timed reframe can be transformative — suddenly the obstacle becomes an opportunity, the failure becomes feedback, or the criticism becomes valuable information. Coaches use reframing sparingly and with care, ensuring it feels genuine rather than dismissive.

Why It Matters

Human beings are meaning-making creatures — we do not respond to events directly, but to the interpretations we make of those events. The same job loss can feel like devastating failure or liberating opportunity depending on the frame applied. The same critical feedback can trigger shame or ignite development. By learning to reframe deliberately, individuals gain a crucial degree of authorship over their emotional lives and behavioral responses — transforming passive victims of circumstance into active interpreters with genuine agency.
