Coaching & Professional Development Glossary

Definition

Well-being is a multidimensional state encompassing physical, emotional, social, and purposeful flourishing. It extends beyond the absence of illness to include positive experiences such as vitality, meaning, positive relationships, engagement, and accomplishment. Martin Seligman's PERMA model identifies five core pillars of well-being: Positive emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Achievement.

In Coaching Context

Well-being coaching addresses the whole person — not just professional performance, but the full landscape of what makes life satisfying and sustainable. Coaches help clients examine their current well-being across multiple dimensions, identify gaps, and create intentional strategies for improvement. Many clients come to coaching experiencing the gap between external success and internal well-being, seeking support in building a life that feels genuinely good to live, not just impressive from the outside.

Why It Matters

Well-being is not a luxury — it is a prerequisite for sustained performance, healthy relationships, and meaningful contribution. Research consistently shows that higher well-being is associated with better decision-making, greater creativity, stronger immune function, more effective leadership, and longer life. Investing in well-being through coaching is not self-indulgent — it is strategic. Individuals who thrive personally tend to contribute more effectively, inspire those around them, and sustain their engagement over the long term.
