Empowerment

Coaching & Professional Development Glossary

Definition

Empowerment is the process of enabling individuals to take ownership of their decisions, actions, and lives by building their confidence, competence, and sense of personal agency. It involves shifting from a dependency mindset to one of self-determination — recognizing that one has the inner resources and authority to create meaningful change.

In Coaching Context

Empowerment is not something a coach does to a client — it emerges from the coaching relationship itself. By holding clients as capable and creative, asking questions that invite reflection rather than providing answers, and celebrating growth, coaches create conditions in which clients discover and claim their own power. This contrasts sharply with advice-giving, which can inadvertently reinforce dependency.

Why It Matters

Lasting change requires internal motivation and self-belief. When people feel empowered, they are more likely to take initiative, persevere through difficulty, and sustain new behaviors over time. Empowerment also has profound social dimensions — in organizational and community settings, cultures of empowerment drive innovation, engagement, and collective resilience far more effectively than cultures of control.
