Cognitive Reframing

Coaching & Professional Development Glossary

Definition

Cognitive reframing is a psychological technique that involves changing the way a person perceives or interprets a situation, event, or belief. By shifting perspective, the same circumstances can be viewed through a different and often more constructive or empowering lens. It is rooted in cognitive-behavioral theory, which holds that our thoughts — not events themselves — determine how we feel and behave.

In Coaching Context

Coaches use reframing to help clients challenge limiting beliefs and unhelpful thought patterns. For example, a client who sees failure as proof of inadequacy might be helped to reframe it as valuable feedback and a necessary step toward mastery. Coaches offer alternative perspectives — not to impose a view, but to expand the client's range of interpretations and open up new possibilities for action.

Why It Matters

The meaning we assign to events shapes our emotional response and ultimately our behavior. People who are stuck are often trapped inside a single, rigid interpretation of their situation. Cognitive reframing is one of the most powerful tools for breaking that stuckness — it does not change the facts, but it can change everything about how a person relates to those facts and what they choose to do next.
