Team Coaching

Coaching & Professional Development Glossary

Definition

Team coaching is a coaching process applied to an intact team — rather than an individual — with the goal of enhancing collective performance, collaboration, shared accountability, and the team's capacity to learn and adapt together. The team coach works with the group as a whole system, helping members improve how they work together rather than coaching each person individually.

In Coaching Context

Team coaching sessions typically involve conversations about how the team functions — its norms, communication patterns, decision-making processes, conflict dynamics, and shared purpose. The coach facilitates dialogue, reflects systemic patterns back to the group, and challenges the team to examine its own functioning with honesty and curiosity. Unlike team training or facilitation, team coaching is ongoing and development-focused, building the team's own capacity for self-awareness and continuous improvement over time.

Why It Matters

Most organizations invest heavily in developing individual leaders while largely neglecting the collective intelligence and relational health of the teams those leaders lead. Yet research shows that team effectiveness is far more dependent on how members interact than on the individual talent assembled. Team coaching addresses the systemic patterns that undermine collaboration, trust, and performance — creating teams that are genuinely greater than the sum of their parts.
