Strengths-Based Coaching

Coaching & Professional Development Glossary

Definition

Strengths-based coaching is an approach that identifies and leverages an individual's natural talents, competencies, and signature strengths as the primary driver of growth, engagement, and results. Rather than focusing primarily on fixing weaknesses, this approach amplifies what a person does best and finds strategies to manage or work around areas of lower natural aptitude. It draws heavily from positive psychology and tools like CliftonStrengths (formerly StrengthsFinder).

In Coaching Context

In a strengths-based coaching engagement, the coach helps the client identify their top strengths, understand how these strengths show up in different contexts, and deliberately deploy them in service of meaningful goals. The conversation often reveals how strengths that were previously underused or invisible can become strategic assets. Coaches also help clients recognize when their strengths are being overused — becoming a liability — and develop the self-regulation to calibrate their expression appropriately.

Why It Matters

Gallup research consistently shows that people who have the opportunity to use their strengths at work are six times more likely to be engaged in their jobs and more productive overall. Yet most performance management systems focus disproportionately on weakness remediation. Strengths-based coaching reorients development toward the exponential returns available from amplifying natural talent, creating more energized, motivated, and effective individuals who bring their best to every challenge.
