Empathy

Coaching & Professional Development Glossary

Definition

Empathy is the capacity to understand and share the feelings, perspectives, and experiences of another person. Psychologists often distinguish between cognitive empathy (understanding what another person is thinking or feeling), emotional empathy (feeling what another person feels), and compassionate empathy (being moved to help based on that understanding). Empathy is distinct from sympathy, which involves feeling sorry for someone from a distance rather than truly entering their experience.

In Coaching Context

Empathy is central to effective coaching. A coach who genuinely understands a client's experience — without rushing to fix, judge, or reassure — creates a space in which the client can be fully honest and feel truly seen. Coaches also help clients develop greater empathy as a skill, particularly in leadership contexts where the ability to understand the perspectives and motivations of team members, stakeholders, and customers is a critical driver of influence and effectiveness.

Why It Matters

Research by the Center for Creative Leadership and others demonstrates that empathy is one of the most important leadership competencies, strongly correlated with employee engagement, innovation, and retention. In personal life, empathy is the foundation of meaningful relationships and the antidote to the loneliness and disconnection that affect increasing numbers of people. Developing empathic capacity — both for others and for oneself — is a transformative outcome of coaching that has ripple effects far beyond the coaching relationship itself.
