Values

Coaching & Professional Development Glossary

Definition

Values are the core principles, beliefs, and standards that guide an individual's choices, priorities, and sense of what is meaningful and important in life. They serve as an internal compass, shaping how we allocate our time and energy, what we are willing to fight for, and what compromises feel unacceptable. Common examples include integrity, creativity, family, freedom, achievement, service, and connection.

In Coaching Context

Values clarification is a foundational element of many coaching engagements. Coaches help clients identify their true values — as distinct from inherited or socially imposed ones — and examine the alignment (or misalignment) between those values and their daily choices. When clients are living in conflict with their values, they typically experience chronic dissatisfaction, stress, or a persistent sense that something is wrong. Coaching restores alignment between values and action, which is one of the most reliable paths to genuine fulfillment.

Why It Matters

Values are not just philosophical abstractions — they are practical decision-making tools. When people have clarity about what they value most, decisions become cleaner, priorities become clearer, and the effort to build a meaningful life becomes more focused. Conversely, values confusion leads to chronic ambivalence and a life that feels somehow unsatisfying even when external metrics look fine. Working with values is among the most powerful and enduring work coaching can do.
