Stress Management

Coaching & Professional Development Glossary

Definition

Stress management refers to the set of techniques, strategies, and practices used to understand, control, and reduce the physical and emotional impact of stress on an individual's functioning and well-being. It encompasses both reactive approaches (coping with stress already experienced) and proactive approaches (building the lifestyle habits, boundaries, and mindsets that reduce stress before it accumulates).

In Coaching Context

Stress management is a frequent coaching topic, particularly for high-performing professionals navigating demanding roles. Coaches help clients examine the sources and triggers of their stress, identify which stressors can be eliminated or minimized, and develop sustainable coping strategies. Crucially, coaching also explores the relationship between a client's values, boundaries, and stress levels — helping clients see that many chronic stressors are structural problems that require behavioral change, not just better coping techniques.

Why It Matters

Chronic, unmanaged stress is one of the leading contributors to physical illness, cognitive impairment, relationship breakdown, and burnout. The American Psychological Association consistently reports that stress is a major public health concern. Effective stress management is not a luxury — it is a prerequisite for sustained high performance, healthy relationships, and long-term well-being. Coaching provides the individualized support needed to address the specific stress patterns that affect each client's unique life and work.
