Mentoring

Coaching & Professional Development Glossary

Definition

Mentoring is a developmental relationship in which a more experienced or knowledgeable individual (the mentor) provides guidance, advice, knowledge, and wisdom to a less experienced person (the mentee). Mentoring relationships are often longer-term and advisory in nature, with the mentor sharing their own experience as a guide for the mentee's development and career navigation.

In Coaching Context

While coaching and mentoring are related and complementary, they are distinct practices. A coach does not need to have experience in the client's field and does not offer advice or share personal stories. A mentor draws on their own journey. In practice, many development relationships blend elements of both. Professional coaches sometimes also serve as mentors in more informal contexts, and organizations increasingly combine coaching and mentoring programs for maximum developmental impact.

Why It Matters

Access to a good mentor can be transformative — it accelerates learning, opens networks, provides insider knowledge, and helps mentees avoid common pitfalls. Research shows that mentored professionals advance faster, earn more, and report higher career satisfaction. For mentors, the relationship is also enriching, offering fresh perspectives, a sense of purpose, and legacy-building. Great mentoring has an outsized impact on individual careers and organizational cultures alike.
